Winery Story
Vilafonté is the first American and South African joint winemaking venture within the global wine community, led by Zelma Long, Mike Ratcliffe and Phillip Freese. The Vilafonté philosophy embodies an obsession with quality, from the soil through to the bottle, and derives its name from the primary soil type of the 100-acre estate, whose character forms the foundation of the wines.
Vilafonté is imported by Bartholomew Broadbent of Broadbent Selections. Known as a lively, witty and informative wine lecturer, Bartholomew is also one of the world’s foremost authorities on Port and Madeira. He is credited for the growth of Port consumption in North America during the mid 1980’s and was responsible for the re-introduction of Madeira to America in 1989, instrumental in its growth since then.Tasting Note
This wine is more Merlot-based; still a blend, but using the Merlot, and Malbec with Cabernet to give it some backbone. It is more supple, more fruit-forward, with silky texture in the mouth and good length, and very approachable and succulent.
